The rates are competitive, the online site is easy to use, and the 24/7 customer service by phone, often with little or no wait, makes it easy to get questions answered and problems cleared up. One of my favorite features of Ally's CDs has been the bonus one gets upon renewal. It doesn't sound like a lot, but in today's low-interest environment, it makes a difference. Way to go, Ally!

I have been an investor for over 40 years since the age of 15 when I bought my first stock. With the recent meltdown of the DOW, several unbiased experts have highly recommended ALLY as a safe haven. WHY? Because they are the ONLY institution that will allow you to withdraw your money early in the case of an emergency and only charge you 60 days interest. Please, call other banks like I did today that offered a 1/2 percentage point higher interest rate and they indicated the penalty would be one year of interest.This difference alone would cost you hundreds of dollars or more. I encourage anyone looking for a CD to do the "Math", read the fine print. You will NOT beat ALLY. I have been a customer for 10 years starting back when they were GMAC. NO institution will allow you to change or upgrade a CD after you "LOCK" in the security; that is an unrealistic demand in the CD arena. Ah, but wait! ALLY offers a Change Your Rate CD, one of the most innovative CD's in the industry. A 2 year term allows you one change, a 4 year term allows you to change your CD's parameters twice. Basic economics indicate the Feds will have to raise interest rates to prevent inflation. This CD allows you to CHANGE the parameters of your investment product. If you can find a better deal, go for it. I can assure you ALLY will not be outdone. I have entrusted ALLY with my funds for a decade and will continue to do so. Interest rates, variety of products and OUTSTANDING customer service has kept me a customer for this long, they must be doing something right. Period.

Ally makes it almost impossible to open a joint account online even when you have an existing joint account. No option to choose "same title". You must enter the user name and password for the joint owner, even when behind the PIN to "protect the security of the second owner". Of course a CS Rep will just do it on the phone without even talking to the joint owner. Makes no sense. And when you tell the CS Rep to cancel, they open it anyway. Lastly, writing a complaint will not help and Ally will not respond to written inquiries.

I have the interest from my 5 year CD deposited directly into my BOFA checking account each month. There wasn't a place to select this option when I formed the CD but I let them know I wanted this option via a secure chat online and sure enough it's working. And if I decide to close my CD early, there is only a two month interest penalty. Awesome!

You getcha! Ally's rates beat local rates hands down. My accts are part of a trust, so account opening isn't as easy as pie - but Ally IS set to open them. A hassle, but not _too_ bad.

The features to change where the interest is deposited does not exist. Also, there is no way to upgrade or change the existing CD. I would not recommend Ally for this reason.

Ally just continues to blow me away by actually picking up with phone when I call. I am so used to either having no pick up at all or waiting for so long I wish I hadn't called at all. Oh and the CD was REAL easy to set up! Great job Ally!
