Working remotely has its perks — pajamas all day, lunch breaks with loved ones and furry friends, a very quick commute — but sometimes we find ourselves missing the buzz of the office. Nothing beats coffee in the breakroom or stopping by a co-worker’s desk for a short problem-solving session. To stay connected while apart, our team at Ally compiled some of our favorite songs, so that everyone could share their top mood-boosting tunes to power through the workday.

Featuring artists from Biggie to Led Zeppelin to Billie Eilish, everyone brought something different. (We’ll admit: The mix of songs is a tad bit eclectic.) Whether you like to start your day with a Beyoncé power ballad or ride out the afternoon with some R.E.M. alt rock, we think these songs can accompany any and all work modes (and moods).

Emails, Emails, Emails

If your goal first thing in the morning is to reach inbox zero before diving into meetings, calls, and more — we get it.  When it seems like you’ve got a million and five messages to speed through, you may need a little easy listening. You know, nothing too distracting (nobody wants to accidently hit “Reply All” on a message meant for their boss!).

For firing off emails:

  • As by Stevie Wonder
  • Serial Bowls by Futurebirds
  • Nightswimming by R.E.M.

Speeding Through Spreadsheets

Too many numbers, too little time. Some of us spend a fair amount of time combing through spreadsheets, and these tasks require some serious focus. When you’re working with data, being precise is a necessity. While classical music is often the go-to for a clear mind, some of us prefer the lull of deep focus beats when diving into data.

For excelling in Excel:

  • Uptown by Drake (feat. Bun B and Lil Wayne)
  • &Burn (with Vince Staples) by Billie Eilish
  • Juicy by The Notorious B.I.G.

Mid-morning Motivation

When breakfast was hours ago and you begin to daydream about your lunchtime sandwich, the dreaded mid-morning slump may start to set in. It’s okay — we all feel it some days. First and foremost: Grab a snack and a coffee pick-me-up (maybe even a latte if you’re feeling fancy). Sometimes, we like to call someone for a quick Zoom coffee break, but if you prefer to sip your java while you work, a little pump-up jam could be exactly the musical motivation you need.

When you need a quick fix energy boost:

  • DNA by Kendrick Lamar
  • Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) by Shakira
  • Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac

Lunch Break

Halfway through the day? Time to eat something tasty and stretch your legs. At Ally, no matter if we’re working from home or in the office, many of our teammates love to get a few steps in during lunch hour. We find that getting outside for a quick walk — even if for just five or 10 minutes — is a great way to clear our minds, helps us refocus, and gets us reenergized for the afternoon.

Close your laptop and take a lap around the block with:

  • Doo Wop (That Thing) by Lauryn Hill
  • Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine
  • Feelin’ Alright by Joe Cocker

Meeting Prep

We all have those days once in a while where our calendars are booked with back-to-back calls. Rushing from conference room to conference room (or hopping between Zoom calls) can be stressful. So, when possible, we think it’s important to take a moment for a deep breath (and a quick review of the meeting agenda). If you’ve got a minute to spare, pop in some headphones and get in the zone.

To destress between calls:

  • Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings by Father John Misty
  • In Bloom by Sturgill Simpson
  • (Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding

Afternoon Power Hour

Did some say happy hour? Just kidding! We’re not quite there … yet. Picture this: It’s the late afternoon on Friday, and you’ve got just two more items on your to-do list. You could leave them for Monday morning or make one final push to power through them now. Our vote? Turn on some jams and get it done. Because nothing feels better than crossing to-dos of your list and heading into the weekend feeling accomplished.

When you’ve got one more task to knock off your to-do list:

  • In the Evening by Led Zeppelin
  • Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen
  • 99 Problems by JAY-Z

Power down the computer and power on the music. Whether we’re heading home on a commute or transitioning out of work-from-home mode, the best way to wrap up a long day (or week) is with some songs you can sing along to — or, preferably, totally belt out. And luckily, our team’s playlist is chock full of jams perfect for just that occasion.

When you’re ready to unwind and recharge:

  • Sunday Best by Surfaces
  • Love on Top by Beyoncé
  • Castles by B.o.B. feat. Trey Songz
