“I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to employ and work with people who I have watched grow professionally – and who I have been able to assist in their career advancement.”

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to employ and work with people who I have watched grow professionally — and who I have been able to assist in their career advancement,” nominee Edwards said. “Some of our employees who started washing cars years ago and are now general managers.”

A 1973 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Edwards began his career selling used cars at McIntyre Oldsmobile Cadillac right out of high school in his hometown. “By the age of 21, I was named used-car manager,” he said. The owners saw potential and made him general manager at their Datsun store in 1982 and by 2000, Edwards was majority owner and dealer principal of what is now Edwards Nissan and Kia.

Today, he owns Edwards Auto Group, which has nine locations and represents brands Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Cadillac, Dodge, Genesis, GMC, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Ram and Subaru, as well as a motorsports and RV dealership. Two of his sons, Todd and Brett, are general managers and his daughter Shawn is director of public relations and employee care for all of the dealerships. “My sons are currently involved in a succession plan for the stores,” he said.

A recipient of numerous awards from car manufacturers, Edwards has also served the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association as chairman, vice chairman, secretary and district director. He is a member of the NADA PAC (Political Action Committee) Presidents Club.

Edwards’ passion for the automotive industry is equaled by his commitment to his community. He is proud of his work for the Council Bluffs Industrial Foundation, an economic development group. “We worked to entice small businesses and jobs to Council Bluffs,” he said. “The highlight of that achievement was being on the board that helped bring Google to our city.”

For his good works, Edwards was inducted into the Abraham Lincoln High School Hall of Fame in 2017, which honors outstanding alumni who are honored for their professional contributions and dedication to community.

Edwards was nominated for the TIME Dealer of the Year award by Bruce Anderson, president of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association. He and his wife, Jody, have five children and 19 grandchildren.
