“Nurturing talent within our dealership community is most satisfying to me.”
“I love to see people develop,” nominee Dosanjh said. “Most of my general managers started with me as salespeople. Nurturing talent within our dealership community is most satisfying to me.”
Dosanjh completed higher secondary school in Punjab, India, in 1975 and immigrated to the United States at age 17. He studied accounting and computer science at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California, where he earned an associate degree. “Although a college education was something I wanted more than anything else, helping to support my parents and family was what I had to do,” he said. “I worked arduously holding multiple minimum-wage jobs while at the same time taking college classes in accounting and computer science.”
In 1979, Dosanjh was hired as a lube technician at Central Valley Automotive in Modesto, the first step in his automotive career. He became a mechanic, learned the business and purchased his first two dealerships, Saturn of Concord and Saturn of Pleasanton in 2003. Today he owns a total of 11 dealerships.
His most important civic achievement is to support scholarships and education for children in inner-city schools and those less fortunate. “We support more than 100 kids at any given time,” he said. “I am also part of the Bonfare Markets Charitable Foundation’s annual fundraiser.”
Dosanjh was nominated for the TIME Dealer of the Year award by Brian W. Maas, president of the California New Car Dealers Association. He and his wife, Val, have two children.
