Making great time. That’s often our goal when driving across the country on congested highways or scenic byways. We want to get from point A to point B as quickly and seamlessly as possible. However, here are a few good reasons to slow down, pull over, and take a splendid detour. Fun, funny and just plain strange, roadside America is full of amazing automotive related sites that deserve more than just a drive by. Here are 5 great #CarLove attractions you don’t want to miss. Maybe you can even incorporate a few favorites into your holiday travel plans.

Highway 87 in Alliance, Nebraska Stonehenge appeals to many because of the mystery surrounding it. Who built the monument? Prehistoric man or…aliens? While the origin of this famous English site is still debatable, Nebraska’s Carhenge is not. Carhenge is a collection of cars – saved from certain destruction – and repurposed to create an oddly appealing roadside replica.

Cadillac Ranch

I-40 in Amarillo, Texas If you already think of cars as a work of art, then Cadillac Ranch is the perfect pull over. 10 colorfully decorated Cadillacs half buried in a straight line make up this unique art installation.

VW Slug Bug Ranch

Route 66 in Conway, Texas Bugs are typically found on farms. But they are usually of the crawling variety. At this country ranch, the most prominent bugs are VWs – stuck in the ground for another bizarre attraction. The cars are spray painted in many colors too. This “artistic” choice helps cover the fact that they are old and mostly rusted vehicles.

Cruising San Mateo

Near I-40 in Albuquerque, New Mexico Also known as “Chevy on a Stick” this roadside eye-catcher is a massive public sculpture that calls to mind France’s Arc de Triomphe. Only in this case, atop the arch is a tiled 1950s “bulgemobile.”

Old Car City

Highway 411 in White, Georgia If you’re searching for acres of #CarLove (more than 34 to be exact) and over 4000 vintage cars, look no further than Georgia’s Old Car City. This amazing site has been around for more than 80 years and is a worthy pilgrimage for car nuts everywhere. Any other places you’d like to add to the list?
