10 things to do after buying a house

What we'll cover

  • What to do after buying a home

  • Priorities for a new homeowner

  • Next steps to take after closing on a home

The homebuying process can be overwhelming. But when it comes to actually being a homeowner, the journey has just begun. Here are 10 steps to take after closing on your house to help you settle into your new abode.

1. Review your inspection report

Take a close look at your  inspection report  and note any needed repairs the previous owner wasn't contractually obligated to fix. From there, prioritize projects in order of importance. Take care of critical safety and functionality repairs first and tackle cosmetic fixes second. If you haven't already, now is a good time to begin building savings for those unexpected costs of home ownership.

2. Put safety first

Change your locks, reset any existing security codes and consider if you want to install or upgrade a home security system. You should also check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and purchase new ones if necessary. Finally, put together some basic emergency supplies — flashlights, emergency radio, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, extra water and batteries.

3. Connect the utilities

Setting up the essentials before you start life in your new home will make for a smoother, stress-free experience. Before you move in, set up your internet, gas, water and electricity. Make sure the previous owners have no outstanding debts to providers that could end up on your bill.

4. Establish your new address

Change your address with USPS to ensure you receive mail. And don't forget to notify creditors and your employer so you don't miss a bill or a paycheck!

If you haven’t already, now is a good time to begin building savings for those unexpected costs of home ownership.

5. Deep clean

Whether you hire professionals or do the dirty work yourself, get your home in spick-and-span condition, ideally before you move in. Don't forget to check the exterior, too, including gutters, backyard, deck or patio. A clean slate is the perfect canvas to start making your new house a home.

6. Unpack and settle in

Moving is stressful, so it can be tempting to let the boxes linger. But the sooner you unpack, the sooner you can start really living in your new home. Don't try to do everything at once. Consider unpacking a room every other day or so. Life will be a lot easier when you're not rummaging through boxes for a frying pan or your favorite sweater.

Tip: Start with the kitchen, so you're not eating take out every night.

7. Get to know the property

Your home is new to you, so take the time to learn where everything is and how it works. For instance, locate the circuit breaker switches and water shut off valve. Do you know how to open the attic door or access the crawl space? Getting the lay of the land early will make you feel more comfortable in your new digs.

8. Meet the neighbors

If they don't drop by first, introduce yourself to those who live around you. Your neighbors can give you recommendations on everything from local handymen to nearby restaurants. Friendly neighbors are also a great resource about town happenings and can keep an eye on your property while you're away.

9. Understand your mortgage

When you receive your first mortgage statement, pay close attention to the amount due, the due date and how to pay so you stay on track. Review the terms of your mortgage so there's no surprises. Eliminate the worry of missing a payment by enrolling in autopay for your monthly mortgage payments. This convenient feature is offered by most lenders, including  Ally Home .

10. Celebrate

Buying a new home is an accomplishment. Whether you throw a big housewarming party and invite all your friends and family or opt for a quiet dinner in your new dining room, take the time to mark this major milestone.
