The Institute of Medicine just released a report (Cognitive Aging –An Action Guide for Individuals and Families) that examines how aging affects attention, thinking and decision-making. The suggestion is that staying physically active, taking control of your cardiovascular health and getting adequate sleep all help in keeping the brain healthy and alert.

The study on Cognitive Aging reveals the number one action you can take to help protect your cognitive health as “being physically active,” and noted that middle-aged and older adults who exercise regularly tend to score higher on thought-based tests. A conclusion was also made that healthy hearts and blood vessels lead to healthier brains. By avoiding activities that hurt your cardiovascular system, such as smoking, hypertension and diabetes, your lower risk of stroke, which can be a major cause of cognitive impairment.

This study also explained that exploring various hobbies and spending quality time with family and friends are two of the best way to keep your brain active. In fact, adults who engage in artistic hobbies, such as painting, drawing and sculpture, are 73% less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment than those who don’t.

Brain neurons die as you age, meaning cognitive decline is unavoidable. Though staying fit, healthy and active are not cures for aging, they do work to preserve your cognitive health, and ultimately make it easier to carry out daily activities that might become harder due to cognitive aging, such as paying bills, driving, following recipes, pursuing favorite activities and maintaining a sense of identity.
