October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, according to the National Cyber Security Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to spreading awareness about online security. Below are some dos and don’ts for keeping all of your information – including your Ally accounts – safe and sound.
- Change your passwords often – about every 30 days.
- Set a password for your home wireless network to protect unwanted access to information on your computer, the National Cyber Security Alliance recommends.
- Make sure your passwords are hard to guess. Microsoft suggests using symbols and advises against using your phone number, names of friends or family members, or a word or phrase related to your login name.
- Regularly update the operating systems on your devices. Mashable points out that keeping your operating system up-to-date helps to more easily investigate security breaches.
- Use the same password across all sites. Doing so means that if one site is compromised, others are as well.
- Install multiple kinds of anti-virus and anti-spyware. This can reduce their effectiveness, says the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team. Instead, find the right program for your computer and use that.
- Click on a link without hovering over it to see the full address, says Mashable. Knowing what page you’re about to open can prevent you from falling into a malware trap.
- Shop or bank on a site that isn’t clearly secure. Web addresses with “https:// or “shtpp://” mean the site takes steps to make users safe, says the National Cyber Security Alliance. A site that begins with “http://” is not secure.
