Jimmy Smith

Jimmy Smith Buick GMC LLC
Athens, Alabama

"This is my most meaningful award because it acknowledges that our team has succeeded in every aspect of the business."

“I believe that providing 52 people, including several members of my family, with good-paying jobs that offer opportunities for advancement and excellent benefits over many years is the most rewarding aspect of my career,” nominee Smith said.

A 1968 graduate of Albertville High School in Albertville, Alabama, Smith earned a B.S. in marketing from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1973. After college, he began selling Chevrolets for his uncle in Albertville, Alabama, before ultimately buying his own dealership in 1981.

“My father had an independent repair shop and towing service, so I was around the car business my whole life,” he said. “In addition, I grew up on Sand Mountain in Alabama, which is a center for the used-car industry, and I learned the business firsthand by being exposed to dealers and wholesalers in my area.”

Today, Smith owns Jimmy Smith Buick GMC and Smith Infiniti of Huntsville in Huntsville, Alabama and has 52 employees. His three children, Justin, Austin and Elizabeth, all attended the NADA Academy and work for the family dealerships, representing the next generation of Smiths to enter the car business.

A chairman of the local marketing council for General Motors (GM), Smith serves as a former chairman for the Automobile Dealers Association of Alabama (ADAA) and a trustee of DealerComp ADAA, the association’s workers’ compensation self-insurance fund.

Smith is proud to have received the GM Mark of Excellence eight times, which recognizes the outstanding performance of individual dealerships throughout the country. “This is my most meaningful award because it acknowledges that our team has succeeded in every aspect of the business,” he said. Smith Infiniti of Huntsville has also earned top CSI honors in service and sales.

And he also excels in the area of community service, contributing his time, talent and resources to numerous organizations, including Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation (sponsor of Crystal Cup Golf Tournament to support hospital services and breast cancer awareness initiatives); St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; local Boys & Girls Club; Alabama Veterans Museum (Athens); Downtown Rescue Mission (Huntsville group that serves the homeless); Alabama Sheriff’s Association; and the Rotary Club of Athens.

Smith was nominated for the TIME Dealer of the Year award by Thomas R. Dart, president of the Automobile Dealers Association of Alabama. He and his wife, Sheila, have three children.
