Latin music star Nohemy on her style, saving money and authenticity

Nohemy, known as ‘Noh’ by her family and fans, brings a contagious energy to both her music and performances. In our latest episode of “Money Clips with Ally,” we learn how this rising star pours that energy into all facets of her life.
Born and raised in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Nohemy’s Latin roots are the foundation for her art, style and confidence. Her music, with its unbridled lyrics, is quickly gaining popularity across audiences and borders. Her style, in its refreshing uniqueness, serves as an inspiration to fans to have confidence in being authentically themselves.
We caught up with Nohemy at Art Basel in Miami, where she performed for the UnitedMasters’ Earn Your Masters program. Read more about her proudest moments, how she shops for her style and what financial advice she would give her younger self.

When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist?
When I made my first song. I recorded it in the garage. It was the feeling that I felt that day that I was like, “I never felt this before.” I feel comfortable. I feel in the right place, at the right time. I was missing that piece in my life, that energy, and that's what made me push to further my career.
So far, what's the proudest moment you've had?
I've done a lot of cool stuff, but I have to say that one of the coolest has to be being part of the UnitedMasters and Pepsi Music Lab. UnitedMasters has presented me with all sorts of cool opportunities, like the work I've done with Ally and the Earn Your Masters programs. Performing at New York Fashion Week and Art Basel has been super epic.
What are you looking forward to in your career?
Following my recent album release, I'm looking forward to opening up for an artist on tour. I’m also looking forward to continuing to grow and expand my community and connect with the fans.
What financial advice would you give your younger self?
Make smart, small investments. I feel like that’s very important. People seem to think about investments in large proportions, but honestly, even the smallest little investments can turn into that large amount.
What are you saving for next?
I have never really taken a vacation. I've always been a workaholic, so I'm saving up because I want to go to Costa Rica. After a lot of years of work, I think I can take a few weeks off and travel.
What’s your guilty pleasure spend?
Food. I love food. I love trying new types of food, too. I don't like sticking to the same thing. That definitely takes a piece of my budget.
How do you shop for your style?
I like to go to thrift stores and find cool stuff and create outfits. It’s the way that you wear things too, that energy. I could buy something that's five bucks and wear it like it was a million bucks. We don't have to spend crazy money to feel and look right.

What does it mean to be yourself?
I didn't know what that meant until about two years ago. I feel like a lot of us struggle with that. Just finding your identity and finding your purpose, your space in the world. I realized that I have so much to offer and so much to give to my community. I'm happy that I was able to find myself. I have friends that are still in search of that identity, so I understand that it can be a struggle for some, but we’ve just got to keep finding ourselves. Spend some time in the mornings, meditate, read books — do things that make you happy. That will help point you in the right direction.
