“I have a love for the business that keeps me getting up in the morning and coming to work every day for 49 years,” nominee Clemons said. “I am blessed to have worked with and partnered with family members that have helped me operate and expand the business.”

Clemons is a 1963 graduate of East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, and worked in district sales for a Des Moines bottler before landing a job at Burkhart-Jenson Ford in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1968. “I started selling cars at Burkhart-Jensen Ford and then purchased the Boone Chevrolet-Buick dealership with a partner in 1975, eventually buying him out and establishing Pat Clemons Inc. in 1978,” he said.

Today, the business has expanded to include three other Iowa dealerships in Marshalltown, Oskaloosa and Ottumwa, representing brands Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Jeep, Lincoln, Ram and Toyota. Two of his sons, Michael and Joseph are partners in the family enterprise.

Clemons is very active in his state association, having served as secretary, vice chairman and chairman of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association. “During my tenure, we helped steer legislation that has protected franchised dealers in Iowa from outside, harmful influences,” he said.

And Clemons is proud of his leadership role with the Iowa Automobile Dealers Foundation for Education, having led the group as president from 2001 to 2006 and establishing a scholarship in his name. The Pat and Carol Clemons Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who is pursuing a career in the automotive industry.

In addition, Clemons is a sponsor of the annual Boone Police Association’s Shop with a Cop program, an event at which local police officers take children in need shopping for Christmas presents. He also donates to Toys for Tots; American Heart Association; local Little League teams; school and church fundraisers; and many other charitable causes.

Clemons was nominated for the TIME Dealer of the Year award by Bruce Anderson, president of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association. He and his wife, Carol, have five sons.
