Returning your Tesla is easy as opening the app.
The Tesla app has everything you need to navigate your return with confidence — just open it and follow the steps. And while you’re at it, review our return checklist (PDF) so you know exactly what to expect.
1.
Schedule self-inspection.
If your state allows, you’ll receive an invitation to complete a self-inspection with our third-party provider when you’re eligible. This allows you to get an early look at what you may be charged if your vehicle has excessive wear prior to turn-in. Get details

Prepare for drop off.
Schedule your drop-off appointment through the Tesla app. Remove the license plate and all personal items from the vehicle.
3.
Confirm mileage.
Log your miles and sign the odometer disclosure when you drop off your Tesla at the designated location.

Here’s a peek at what to expect when preparing your vehicle for return.
Third-party inspection.
We work with third-party inspection providers to help you complete a self-inspection of your vehicle. Depending on your state, they’ll reach out before your lease ends with more information to guide you through it. Once the self-inspection is complete, you’ll be able to review your vehicle’s inspection report. You’ll also receive a letter detailing any potential charges for excess wear and mileage. For those states without the self-inspection option, an inspection will be performed after vehicle turn-in. After turn-in, you’ll receive the final bill that also includes any late charges and past due amounts.
Mileage check.
Stay on track and avoid extra fees by keeping an eye on your mileage. Check your current odometer reading against your lease agreement's total mileage allowance. If you've gone over, you might be charged for the extra miles.
Wear and Tear.
It's natural for your Tesla to show signs of wear. However, excessive wear or missing parts may result in additional charges when you return it. Once you complete the inspection, you’ll receive a condition report based on the photos you provide to our inspection provider. When you return your vehicle, please bring the following items you received at the beginning of the contract:
A copy of your lease agreement
Owner's manual
Maintenance guide
You will also need to return all original equipment, including keys, keyless entry remotes, electric vehicle chargers and cables, DVD player headphones and remotes, cargo covers, convertible boot covers, etc.
Contact your state agency to determine if your state requires your license plate to be returned. If you moved, contact your previous state agency.
Requirements for Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
To return your license plate, send us a copy of the cancellation receipt. If you’re transferring your license plate, send a copy of your new registration after the transfer is complete to help ensure proper taxation and any refund, if eligible. You can email JacksonvillePlateCancellation@ally.com or fax your copy to 904-886-5204. If we don’t hear from you within 30 days of your lease return date, our cancellation team will cancel your tag.
